Thirty Yonkers Students Awarded Scholarships At Riverfront Library Ceremony

YONKERS, JUNE 6, 2004 -

Yonkers Mayor Philip A. Amicone and Superintendent of Schools Angelo Petrone today awarded Yonkers high school seniors 20 Investing in Youth scholarships, sponsored by Classic Residence by Hyatt, and ten Breakthrough scholarships, sponsored by Parkledge Apartments. The thirty students and their families were honored at a luncheon event held today at the Yonkers Riverfront Library located at Larkin Center.

The scholarship winners were chosen by their schools based on many criteria, including their four-year grade point averages and their participation in community service efforts during their high school years.

Mayor Amicone said that he is extremely pleased that Classic Residence by Hyatt and Parkledge Apartments chose to invest in the future of Yonkers by sponsoring such innovative programs for youth. “By providing funds to help so many Yonkers students and their families cope with the increasing costs of higher education, these firms are clearly demonstrating their strong commitment to the Yonkers community.”

Angelo Petrone, superintendent of the Yonkers Public Schools, said: “These scholarships provide a growing number of our graduating seniors with funding for the continuance of their education after high school. We are grateful to Classic Residence by Hyatt, Parkledge Apartments and the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency (YIDA) for designing this excellent program.”

The scholarship program was developed by the YIDA and is implemented every year with assistance from the principals of each of Yonkers five high schools.
